what is the probability of producing a white mouse when two pure black mice are bred?
It depends on whether the gene for black fur is dominant over the gene for white fur or if it is recessive. Each characteristic that an organism shows, is determined by alleles in the genes, there are recessive alleles and dominant alleles. The dominant allele is always the one that shows the characteristic in the organism, but if an organism has two recessive alleles, then the recessive characteristic is shown.
Think of it as two flavours of ice-cream. A child wants an ice-cream, and there are two favours available, one it loves and one it doesn't. If there are two of the ice-creams that it loves, the child will definitely pick that one, if there are one of each, it will again pick the one it loves, but if there are only two of the ones it doesn't love left, it will have to pick one of those.
If the gene for black fur is recessive, then for the mice to be black, they would need both recessive black genes, therefore none of their off spring would be white.
If the gene for black fur is dominant, and both parents have both dominant gene, then it is impossible for their offspring to be white.
If one parent has one recessive and one dominant gene, (one black, one white), but the other parent has both dominant, the chance of getting white offspring will also be impossible.
But, if both parents have one dominant gene and one recessive gene, (one black one white), then the chance of getting a white offspring is 50%.
