How come on my palm i connect the usb cable and press the button on it, it will say unable to initiate?

when i press the button on my usb cable for my palm it says unable to initiate Hot sync operation because the port is in use by another application. What does that mean? and how can i fix it?
the model is a plam centro

try a soft reset of the device.. Alas it would be nice to let us know the model of ur device, the OS version, etc..
