Spanish Latin
Which Language is easier Spanish or Latin?
I want to take one in highschool and lots of people say spanish, and lots of other people say latin. In your opinion which one is easier to learn? Thanks.
Well, both languages are Italic languages so you know that they more or less have a similar relationship with English. Spanish, as a Gallo-Iberian language is actually more closely related to English, but not significantly more so. Usually, when you figure out which of two languages will be easier to learn, you figure out which one is more closely related to your native language.
But, Spanish is far easier than Latin due to the fact that it's a much more modern language, whereas Latin ceased to evolve centuries ago. Naturally, as languages evolve, they get simpler. Latin retains many features that would be viewed as very archaic in modern Italic languages. For example, Latin has a system of case, while this has practically vanished from all of the modern Italic languages.
Case is a system under which a word inflects (i.e. changes) based on its grammatical usage in a sentence. This no longer truly exists in Spanish, or in English, even though Old English had a system of case. You'll find that Spanish grammar is much more modern (and therefor closer to English) than Latin, which you may find contains some grammatical concepts that you've never stumbled across before. Spanish will be much easier for you than Latin.
