Wireless Scratch
Help me set up a home wireless network from scratch!?
I have a fairly new Dell tower, running XP [by choice]. It doesn't have a WiFi card. I also have a vintage Toshiba laptop, also running XP, with WiFi installed. [Someone else upgraded/modified the laptop for WiFi--not me!]
I have cable internet--a Motorola modem obviously hardwired to the tower PC.
What I want to do is to keep a hardwired connection to the tower, but do whatever is necessary to network the laptop wirelessly.
What equipment do I need to buy, and what's the easiest way to set this up? And how do I secure it? Thanks!
What you need is a wireless router. A wireless router is a little box that you connect to your cable modem. You can then connect the router to your tower. This will allow the tower to connect to the Internet through the router. Also, a wireless router can create a wireless network for you, which will allow your laptop to connect to the Internet.
The router will have built-in safety features to keep your network secure.
Here is an example of a wireless router: http://www.amazon.com/Linksys-WRT54G-Wireless-G-Router/dp/B00007KDVI/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1231013710&sr=8-1
(If you wanted, you could put a Wi-Fi card in your tower so you could move your tower away from the router.)
